There’s nothing quite like the taste of a freshly baked pizza with a crispy crust, gooey cheese, and your favorite toppings. While pizza delivery is convenient, it does add up!

Plus, there’s a sense of unique joy in making your own pizza at home. To achieve that authentic pizza taste, investing in a portable pizza oven is a great idea, whether you want to cook alone or for friends and family.

In this article, we will explore the top five portable pizza ovens available on Amazon, enabling you to create delicious pizzas wherever you go.

What is a portable pizza oven?

When you think of pizza ovens, you probably consider concrete and bricks in a garden setting. Well yes, that is true, but in recent years pizza ovens have become smaller and cheaper. Ooni, is a brand which makes small and portable pizza ovens.

Their ovens are usually 30x30cm, fit in a bag and weigh less than 5kg. But what makes a pizza oven  portable?

Portable pizza ovens are typically smaller and are designed to be compact and lightweight, making them easier to handle and transport. This allows you to take them on camping trips, picnics, or move them around your garden or kitchen as needed.

Portable pizza ovens come in various fuel options, such as gas, electric, or wood-fired. Electric pizza ovens usually offer the most convenience in terms of portability, as they are easier to control, and clean. Charcoal and wood-fired ovens may require more effort and maintenance, but they provide the authentic flavors to your pizzas.

Are pizza ovens worth it?

Honestly, pizza ovens are worth it for a number of reasons. Especially if you eat pizza more than once a week.

Nowadays a pizza can cost upwards of £20 and when you consider what goes into a pizza, buying a pizza oven and cooking your own could save you a lot of money. Here are some other reasons:

  • Authenticity – Still getting the authentic pizza taste. Pizza ovens, especially those designed for high temperatures, can reach the ideal cooking conditions needed to produce crispy yet chewy crusts, perfectly melted cheese, and beautifully charred toppings.
  • Time and energy – Pizza ovens are capable of reaching optimal cooking temperatures in a fraction of the time required by conventional ovens. Some in literally minutes!
  • Cost – The obvious one, you can get a pack frozen pizzas for £5 and electricity for 30p. Or if you make your own pizza, then even less! That’s 6/7 pizzas which can be made at home for the price of one eating or or ordering in!

What temperature should a pizza oven be?

Usually, the hotter the pizza the better the pizza will be. Electric pizza ovens aim for around 200 degrees, but most portable ovens can range anywhere from 220 to 400 degrees.

It’s of course harder to measure the heat of your garden pizza oven. But pizza ovens with wooden fuel usually burn at around 300-400 degrees.

The optimum cooking heat for a pizza is around 300 degrees, that way the pizza can cook fast and thorougher. At 300 degrees pizzas only take 2 minutes to cook. Any higher than that you will probably burn the pizza!

So what are the best portable pizza ovens?

In this list we tried to compare different models, sizes and fuel options. From the ones we tested, these are the best 4.

Fuel

The Big Horn uses a wood pellet fuel. Wood pellets are a type of biomass fuel usually made from compressed wood and other wood waste materials.

Wood pellets are an efficient and convenient fuel source. Pizza ovens like the Big Horn traditionally rely on wood-fired heat to achieve the high temperatures necessary for baking authentic, pizzas.

One of the main advantages of using wood pellets in pizza ovens is their consistent and controlled burn. The pellets have a standardised size and density, allowing for a regulated cooking process and temperature. Meaning the pizzas can be replicated again and again.

Why get the Big Horn?

The Big Horn oven is worth considering for several reasons. The stainless steel body ensures durability, while the stone cooking surface achieves optimal cooking conditions.

Versatility is another key advantage of the Big Horn pizza oven. While its primary function is wood-fired cooking. This versatile appliance can also serve as a grill, smoker, or traditional oven.

Portability is another standout feature of the Big Horn. It is designed to be easily transported and set up, making it ideal for outdoor gatherings, camping trips, picnics, or simply enjoying a wood-fired meal in your garden.

The Smith-Style weighs only 6kg and measures roughly 40 x 35 cm, meaning it can fit on most BBQs and is a very portable size.

Why get the Smith-Style Oven?

I added the Smith-Style to this list because of it’s small size, ease of use and cheap price.

Fireboxs’ that sit on the BBQ can be a valuable addition to your outdoor cooking setup for several reasons.

First, it provides a cost-effective solution. Instead of investing in a separate pizza oven, which can be quite expensive, the Smith-Style pizza oven attachment allows you to add to your existing BBQ. This attachment is more affordable than a pizza oven, making it a budget-friendly option for pizza lovers.

In addition to cost savings, a pizza oven attachment that sits on the BBQ is a space-efficient solution. If you have limited outdoor space, combining a pizza oven with your BBQ eliminates the need for an additional standalone oven. This space-saving design allows you to enjoy the benefits of a pizza oven without sacrificing valuable patio or backyard area.

FAQ

Can I cook chicken in a pizza oven?

Yes, while pizza ovens are primarily designed for cooking pizzas, they can also be used to cook a wide variety of other foods. The high temperatures and even heat distribution in a pizza oven make it suitable for various cooking dishes like bread, roasted vegetables and meats.

How hot can pizza ovens be?

Pizza ovens can get very hot, especially the larger garden ovens which are fueled by wood. It’s not unheard of for pizza ovens to reach 860°F (460°C) because you are essentially lighting a bonfire inside. These ovens can typically cook pizzas in less than 2 minutes if the heated is evenly distributed.

How to build a pizza oven from scratch?

Simple pizza ovens are not hard to make, all you need is a stone cooking base with a heating system below. Whether that be wood or coal, by heating up the stone plate you will cook the pizza above. Then encase the stone base and you have a complete pizza oven! For a full guide on how I built my own DIY pizza oven you can see that here.

Are pizza ovens dangerous?

Like all open or closed fires, there is an element of risk. But as long as you follow the instructions from your pizza oven they are safe. But there is always a burn risk even if they are inside.

Are pizza ovens protable?

Yes, some smaller and lighter models can be transported. Some pizza ovens can be electric and often consist of just a heated metal plate. They can be transported and set up in different locations, whether that be at a party or a family gathering.

Are electric pizza ovens better than wood fueled?

Yes and no, electric pizza ovens maybe quicker to heat up and serve pizzas, but miss the authentic taste. A wood-fueled pizza oven can enhance the taste of pizza and give it a different flavour. The intense heat often means (once the oven is hot) pizzas can be cooked in less than 2 minutes. Definitely an advantage over electric pizza ovens.
