Many modern Russell Hobbs microwaves come with super easy to use defrosting features. These features enable you to input the weight and the microwave will decide the ideal defrost time. Most of the newer models display these in the forms of knobs and dials usually on the front. However some microwaves are not clear.

How does a microwave even work?

Microwaves work by transferring energy, now that may seem complicated but it’s really quite simple. You warm food by transferring energy into another form which then in turn increases the temperature of what you’re cooking.

This can be explained in molecules. When molecules move around fast they generate kinetic energy which releases heat. On a regular conventional electric oven, energy passes through metal conductors.

A microwave oven cooks food by using microwave radiation to heat water molecules in the food. The water molecules then vibrate rapidly, creating heat which cooks the food. The microwaves are produced by a magnetron, which is a tube-like device that is located inside the oven usually on the back panel, but sometimes on the ceiling of the machine. The microwaves are directed into the cooking chamber by a waveguide, which is a metal tube that directs the microwaves to the food. The food is usually on a turn table to ensure an even cook, that’s why it turns.

Russell Hobbs RHM unboxing

In this video by Topdog he unboxes the popular RHM2076B model, the same in our guide.

He gives a full rundown of the microwave itself, and a good 360 perspective of the size and what it looks like.

The defrost guide

It’s important to remember that not all microwaves are the same, some Russell Hobbs older generation models do not have this function.

Step 1

Press the timer/weight button

  • Start buy pressing the button “Weight/Time Defrost”, on most Russell Hobbs machines it looks like this
  • For reference this is a Russell Hobbs RHM2076B 20L, one of the most popular models on Amazon

  • After pressing, the oven will display “dEF1” where the timer usually displays
Step 2

Turn the dial

  • Turn the “Timer/Weight” dial and select roughly the weight of the food
  • The weight should be set between 100-2000g, so plenty of play room for larger foods

  • Press the “Start” button to automatically cook your food.
  • The timer should of worked out the time needed to cook your weight of food

How can I defrost using other microwaves?

Although this guide is for Russell Hobbs specific models. Most modern machines are the same and follow the same steps.
